CHANDIGARH: Even as the UT education department has given the go-ahead to re-open schools for classes VI to VIII, the majority of parents are not in favour of sending their wards yet. In this backdrop, private schools are planning to re-open first for classes IX to XII.
Although the vaccine is here, the parents feel it is still not the time to start sending children to school.
“The vaccine may soon be available to us, but I still feel it is not the correct time for the kids of VI to VIII classes to go to school,” said Vartika Grover, a parent.
The parents want school managements to take responsibility for the children’s safety. “We have been hearing of so many instances of fresh infections among children and teachers after the reopening of schools in different states. It is insane to reopen schools unless the school managements accept the responsibility of ensuring the safety of the children. By taking the consent of parents, the schools are trying to escape their responsibility,” said Nitin Goyal, president, Chandigarh Parents' Association.
“Today only we heard that 16 teachers of a Punjab school have tested positive and one of them died. We accept that Covid is the new normal and we have to live with it, but we can’t risk the lives of children. We must be patient till the vaccine success rate is validated,” said Deepika Bahri, another parent.
